"Operation Daddy: Here Come the War Brides!"
Synopsis: As two 80-something Canadian war brides arrive at an old church to honour a common friend,
they find themselves reliving the past in a way neither imagined possible. As old memories come back, Charlotte
and Katherine reflect on how their lives were forever changed during WWII when they were young women flirting outrageously
with foreign men in uniform…and destiny.
OPERATION
DADDY delivers a musical stroll down memory lane as it follows the relationship between three
unlikely friends in war-time Britain who flirt with and fall for Canadian servicemen during World War II. The
journey has many moments inspired by actual 'War Brides' experiences and is punctuated by showstoppers
and tender ballads made famous by stars of the day (like The Andrews Sisters, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Dinah Shore,
Judy Garland, Vera Lynn...and the big band orchestras)!
OPERATION DADDY proudly celebrates the 60th Anniversary of Canada's
War Brides, most of whom arrived in our country in 1946.
FOR HISTORY BUFFS: The truth in Cupid's historic role: As allied forces defeated
Hitler's Germany and World War II ended, Canadian troops started making their way back home. And in 1946, the women they’d married and children they’d fathered while stationed overseas sailed
to Canada on specially re-outfitted luxury ocean liners and war ships
to a land they knew little about. The press aptly coined this reuniting
effort “Operation Daddy” and it remains the largest, most unique immigration endeavour ever to
be coordinated by the Canadian government. The story of the Canadian war brides and their
journey remains
one of the most fascinating and romantic bits of history to come out of World War Two. Why these women would leave the
emotional security of home, friends and family to start new lives with men they'd barely begun to know as their
husbands is definitely a story worth telling!
